Have you ever heard a song that just makes you feel like you’re on fire – but in a good way? Well, this song is HOT. It’s sexy and provocative – and I’m not even talking about the lyrics. I honestly can barely understand what FKA Twigs is even saying, but I’m sure it’s along the lines of…ok, actually I just Googled the lyrics and yeah, they’re pretty hmm…
In all seriousness, the bass, the sultriness of FKA Twig’s voice, and just the electricity of the song makes me feel like I can climb a mountain. It just gets the heart racing while at the same time I feel like I have to take deep breaths and slow it down. And it’s something different, genre-wise. I’m not sold on calling this strictly Hip-Hop/ R&B, or electronic, or trance, or any ONE thing. It’s a combination of influences, I’m sure. Which is amazing. I like discovering artists that can mix it up and experiment with all sorts of music productions.
I was listening to the band TV on the Radio recently and I just love how their music is also a toss of genres. They’re a band that got me through college, by the way. I really need to do an entire post on them. One of my classes in college focused on music genre tropes. How an artist will follow a sort of blueprint to call himself/herself a specific type of artist. Like a rapper or a rocker. Then, you have the question of when an artist doesn’t follow the standard blueprint and deviates into the territories of many genres. What do you call them? I used TV on the Radio as a prime example and now I’m definitely getting the same vibe from FKA Twigs.
She’s basically an art-piece. Even her music videos are motion art and jolting. She clearly brings attention to sexiness and semi-erotic behavior, but other than that she uses beauty and ‘high-quality’ aesthetics in her videos. Just look at Two Weeks. I had two thoughts while watching this video in terms of references: Queen of the Damned (film) and Kanye West’s Power music video.
I was a kid when Queen of the Damned premiered and even back then, I thought Aaliyah was absolutely stunning . I couldn’t take my eyes off of her abs. Like how did she move like that? She was definitely goals for me to achieve once I was all grown up. Power will forever be THE music video that comes to mind when I think of art. I took a theatre class in college and I had to give an example of ‘high art’ aesthetics in a music video…I chose this one and my professor absolutely agreed.
Anyway, this song has been on repeat for me the past few days. I had already knew of FKA Twigs, because she’s engaged to Robert Pattison and I was one of those Twi-Hard / Twilight hate-watchers. I still follow-up every now and then on what the actors are doing today (Nikki Reed married Ian Somerhalder from The Vampire Diaries). Plus, I was Team Edward when I wasn’t rolling my eyes at the screen. I read all of the books and fell into that dark hole as a teen. Nowadays, I enjoy watching how much Robert Pattison disses the series in his interviews. So yeah, when this song popped up on my Spotify, I recognized the name but I had no idea how talented FKA Twigs was. She’s definitely someone that I’m going to keep on my radar.
Check her out.
‘Til next time.
